About The Program

 

May 12 - 16, 2025 | In-person, New York City

The Bloomberg Business Journalism Diversity Program is a partnership with the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the Graduate School of Journalism at UC, Berkeley that welcomes students who are interested in learning about business journalism. You'll explore how journalists report effectively on the economy, companies, financial and commodity markets, government and labor where wealth and power converge.

The summer 2025 program will be conducted in New York City. All costs to participants will be covered including travel to New York City, lodging and meals during the program.

Bloomberg journalists and executives, including Matt Winkler, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Bloomberg News, will teach courses while others will be led by faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill and UC, Berkeley. The program will lead participants through principles of reporting, editing and applied business and economic knowledge.

Participants of the program will:

    • Acquire a basic overview of markets and financial concepts.
    • Learn the fundamentals of business journalism, one of the most in-demand fields in media today.
    • Practice writing and reporting techniques via hands-on instruction with Bloomberg journalists.
    • Gain insights on working in a diverse environment and the importance of representation in journalism.
    • Join an accomplished group of fellow students and program alumni who will serve as mentors as you navigate your career path.

Bloomberg Journalism Diversity Program

Location: New York City

This program is an intensive, five-day business journalism workshop that is a partnership between Bloomberg News, the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Who Should Apply?

  • University students who have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism and who are not currently studying business journalism.
  • Rising juniors and seniors.
  • Students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and lived experiences are encouraged to apply.
  • Full-time international students studying in the U.S. are welcome to apply, but permission from their institution is required in order to pay for travel cost and issue stipends. Permission is not always granted. If you are an international student please consult with your campus’ international student representative.

Application Process

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025 (early applications encouraged)

Students interested in the program should complete an online application. Finalists will be contacted for an interview via video conferencing after the application closing date.

The following materials must be uploaded as part of the application:

  • A resume
  • An unofficial transcript
  • One writing sample (500 words): Identify your professional role model in journalism. What attributes do you admire most about this person and why?
  • Contact information for one faculty reference

About The Blooomberg-UNC-Berkeley Partnership

The Bloomberg Business Journalism Diversity Program has two aims: to introduce current and future journalism students to the dynamic field of business journalism and to increase diversity among journalists reporting on business. It will provide participants unparalleled access to a leading financial news organization, as well as to some of the most influential people in the industry.

UNC-Chapel Hill has partnered with Bloomberg since 2017 to provide the Bloomberg-UNC-Berkeley Business Journalism Diversity Program at UNC-Chapel Hill and the University of California, Berkeley. The program partnered with the Department of Journalism at City, University of London in 2019 to offer a workshop for students in the U.K. The program has given more than 160 students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of business journalism.
